Sarah Marino teaches “From the Field to Finished: Five Case Studies”

Sarah Marino
During this session, Sarah will take us from the field to the finished file with five in-depth case studies, with a focus on macro subjects, plants, abstractions, and smaller scenes found in nature. Each case study will include a discussion about all of the things that go into creating a finished photo: making a connection with a subject in the field, taking that idea and translating it into a composition, working with natural light, camera technique, and then processing the file back at home. This presentation will include lessons on mindset, creativity, and seeing opportunities in the landscape along with technical skills like working with shallow depth of field, focus stacking, and processing skills.

Michael Bollino teaches “In Search of Small Scenes”

Michael Bollino
Michael explains his approach to noticing and photographing small scenes within the larger grand landscape. He delves into his personal process, starting with shifting the mindset, becoming aware of the given conditions, aligning with the light, developing image ideas, and, finally, strategies for locating and photographing those slices of visual wonder which exist within every grand landscape. He ends the presentation with an image processing demonstration where he covers simple concepts and steps for clarifying the message of the image.
Bio:
Michael is a nature and landscape photographer with over two decades of experience photographing the beauty of the natural world, from his Pacific Northwest, to locations throughout the American West, as well as destinations around the world. His passion for photography results from a lifetime spent exploring the natural world while backpacking, climbing, and traveling. Photographing these adventures was an integral part of each experience, resulting in a body of work which aimed to capture the wonder, power, and sense of awe he encountered while moving through nature. In recent years, Michael’s artistic approach has evolved toward photographing open-ended environments offering an endless array of creative options to draw inspiration from. In this regard, he spends a lot of his time photographing forests and desert environs, his two favorite ecosystems to explore. Michael is also a professional educator who enjoys teaching in the field as well as online. He resides in Portland, Oregon with his wife Betsy and son Landon, his two most faithful adventure partners.

Anna Morgan teaches “Vision and Self Discovery: Reflexivity as Photographic Practice”

Anna Morgan
Creating art has the extraordinary potential to reflect our innermost thoughts and emotions. Practicing photography with intention as a reflexive practice helps us uncover hidden truths and deepens our understanding of who we are as individuals. Approaching photography in this way gives us permission to let go of the concept of subject and instead to embrace metaphor, imagination, expression and authenticity. Anna will share her thoughts on the importance of looking and what it means to slow down. In addition, Anna will offer practical suggestions for incorporating self-reflection into your practices as a means of becoming an active participant in the landscape and making work that is personally meaningful to you.
Bio:
Anna Morgan now dedicates her time to nature photography and writing, having worked as a companion animal veterinarian in a previous career. Anna is best known for photographing smaller scenes including intimate and abstract details in nature, and encouraging a slow, contemplative approach focused on personal expression and awareness of self. Anna completed a veterinary master’s program in Conservation Medicine in 2020 where her research delved into photographic theory, social justice, feminist theory, ecosystem health and Indigenous ways of knowing to bring photography and conservation together. Anna is passionate about teaching others how to use photography as a tool for reflecting on and expressing personal identities while also advocating for the responsible stewardship of natural places.

Beth Buelow teaches "Creating Personally Iconic Imagery (Epic Location Not Required)"

Beth Buelow
There's a drive nature photographers share to seek out and capture the iconic landmarks and vistas. After all, those scenes are likely part of what drew us to landscape photography in the first place. But as popular locations become more crowded and vulnerable, we're challenged to temper that drive and seek out new horizons. Instead of relying on photographing iconic locations, what if we focused on creating more personally iconic images? We'll turn a few definitions on their head and look at how to release "epic location FOMO" in service to creating a body of work that reflects your distinct vision.
Bio:
Beth is a Michigan-based artist, coach, and educator specializing in abstract and minimalist photography. Beth's creative philosophy is simple: If you’re not amazed, you’re not paying attention. Her work doesn’t fit into one genre or subject, as she aims to reflect the incredible world around us. Inspired by Walt Whitman’s words, "I am large, I contain multitudes," Beth's photography explores themes of calm, order, mystery, balance, and experimentation. These elements may seem at odds, but they reflect the complexity of her creativity.
