Join us as we Hone our Craft!
Honing our Craft
To hone something is to smooth, sharpen, refine, or perfect something over a period. With photography we balance so many variables and constantly find ourselves looking for the right tool for the job. Sometimes how we might want to show a scene or communicate an emotion does not come to fruition as we lack the skill. This series will focus on how we can learn some new skills to help us within the landscape.
- January 29th: Paul Nguyen will kick off the series by teaching us the ins and outs of creating timelapses. He’ll cover everything from basic camera settings and setup to crafting both simple and intricate timelapse projects.
- February 5th: Kristen Ryan will guide us through the art of long exposures. Learn how to use filters, adjust camera settings, calculate exposure times, and find the perfect scenes for stunning shots.
- February 11th: Susan Magnano takes us deeper into the world of light painting. Discover how to create and showcase scenes in a creative and artistic way, literally shedding light on a whole new perspective.
- February 19th: We wrap up the series with Stephanie Johnson, focusing on the highly requested topic of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). Learn how to identify the right scenes and master various techniques to create dynamic, unique images.
Each session will be presented LIVE at 4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET.
This series will be hosted by 2024 Inspired Creator, Meredith Fontana. This special series will feature demonstrations of post-processing techniques for various methods. The presenters will showcase their work using their own images, but you're encouraged to submit your own photos for a chance to be included!
Registration for the series comes with the opportunity to ask questions live, rewatch the sessions as much as you want for as long as you want, and even download for offline viewing. They are all recorded so no need to be there live! You will have permanent access to the recordings through My Library, YouTube or Dropbox file download.
Nature Photography Classes offer are a unique opportunity to hear from and interact with people that rarely speak with audiences and are considered some of the best photography educators in the world.

Paul Nguyen teaches "Time Lapse Photography: When the Pace of Life just isn't Fast Enough"
Paul Nguyen
Add a brand new dimension to your photographic passion by learning how to create time lapse movies. By capturing your subjects with time lapse photography, processes that normally appear subtle or unnoticeable to the human eye, such as the motion of the sun and stars, or the ordinary daily events of the city, become very pronounced. This type of photography uses still photos taken at regular intervals, which, when shown in sequence as a video clip, create a high-speed animation of an event taking place. With digital cameras, creating time lapses is easier than ever, and many newer camera models even have built-in time lapse programs. Let me show you the camera techniques and editing programs we use to bring life to landscapes, sunsets and rises, and the night sky.

Stephanie Johnson teaches "Abstracting the Landscape with ICM"
Stephanie Johnson
In her presentation, Stephanie takes you on a journey of exploration to learn techniques for abstracting the landscape through the lens of Intentional Camera Movement, aka ICM, and Multiple Exposure ICM (ME ICM). Stephanie has a deep love and passion for the individually expressive nature of ICM and ME ICM, and she encourages photographers to ‘see things differently’ through the lens of their own individual artistry, as well as through the lens of their inner creative selves. Using ICM as a creative tool enables photographers to do just that.
In this talk, Stephanie covers the basic principles and techniques of ICM and ME ICM to provide a foundational understanding of various ways the camera may be used as a tool for creative expression through movement. She also shows by example how different sizes and speeds of movement create different types of effects and explains how various combinations of factors can be utilized to create unique imagery, even from the same scene or photographic outing. She also shares examples of scenes before and after using ICM and discusses what she looked for, or what caught her attention, while creating the resulting images. A short fieldwork video to show some of the camera movements Stephanie uses in different locations will be shown, as well.
Stephanie also presents a short section on mobile ICMs for the growing trend towards creating these types of images with mobile devices, for both Android and iPhone users.
Bio:
Stephanie is a self-taught photographic artist, with a focus on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), Multiple Exposure (ME), and Creative Photography techniques as a form of artistic expression. She has a deep passion for creating uniquely distinctive images by working with camera movement, multiple exposure, and a variety of creative processes to reveal the essence of any given scene or subject. As a creative photographer she is always seeking to push the boundaries of her own artistry and to evolve her techniques. Stephanie brings an intuitive and instinctual approach to her photography-as-art to visually express light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through these creative photography techniques.
Stephanie is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag), a first-of-its-kind e-magazine dedicated to celebrating the art and beauty of ICM, Multiple Exposure, and Creative Photography. Stephanie leads immersive on-location creative photography workshops in the US and the UK in collaboration with various creative photographers. As an instructor for Santa Fe Workshops (SFW) she leads ICM and Creative Photography workshops online and on-location for SFW, as well. She also collaborates with Out of Chicago and various other online learning communities and camera clubs to share her passion, processes, and knowledge of the creative photography techniques she uses in her own work.
